PRECISION HUNTING RIFLE

This course is designed to give hunters the skills to make shots at further than normal distances. Whether that’s based on the type of animal you are hunting, or the environment you are hunting in. Targets will be engaged out to a maximum distance of 600 yards or the maximum distance of your rifle/scope capabilities. This class will cover field firing positions such as firing off a bipod/tripod, backpack, or sling. 

Understanding the ballistic capabilities of your rifle and ammunition will be heavily emphasized. Ammunition selection will also be addressed, along with a ballistic gel demonstration. Students will be exposed to external factors such as wind, and other environmentals that will affect the impact of your round. Introduction to range estimation using the Mil Dot reticle will be addressed along with the proper use of laser range finders. Minimum recommended scope magnification is 4X powder.

CALIBER:
Minimum recommended caliber is .223 Remington/5.56 mm.

EQUIPMENT LIST:

  • Eye protection;
  • Ear protection;
  • 400 rounds of ammunition (see our AMMO RESTRICTIONS policy);
  • Quality rifle with scope;
  • Knee pads and elbow pads;
  • Any personal equipment the student would like to use for hunting, i.e., bipod, tripod, shooting sticks, backpack, shooting mat, etc.

Only AMERICAN MADE, brass-cased, copper-jacketed, good quality ammo from the approved list below is allowed at Red River West.
THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY NO EXCEPTIONS TO THESE POLICIES.

RANGE POLICIES UPDATE

Red River West representatives will inspect all ammo brought for classes, competition or personal use at our facility. This is to ensure that all ammo is safe for use here and complies with our Ammo Restrictions policy. If any unauthorized restricted ammo is found, the person having it will be immediately expelled from the range with no refund. This is for the safety of all persons at the range as well as for protection of our property and targetry.
Please note only Red River West can approve or suggest ammo, not an instructor. However, check the instructor's website to ensure you have the required minimum round count.
MAGAZINE LOADING/UNLOADING IS ALLOWED ONLY AT THE GEAR TABLES. THERE IS NO LOADING/UNLOADING MAGAZINES IN THE PARKING OR GENERAL AREAS.

For long range classes, match ammunition is required; for example, Federal Gold Medal Match or Black Hills Match.

AMMO RESTRICTIONS POLICY

NO steel case, steel core, armor piercing (M855, green tip, SS109, Win Q3131, Win 3131A, tungsten penetrator, black tip, etc.), XM-193, tracer, incendiary, aluminum case, or communist block ammo is allowed…PERIOD.
No ‘remanufactured’ ammo is allowed from ANY manufacturer.
For long range classes, match ammunition manufactured by one of the above listed manufacturers is required; for example, Federal Gold Medal Match or Black Hills Match.

HOLSTER RESTRICTIONS POLICY

SERPA HOLSTERS ARE STRICTLY PROHIBITED AT RED RIVER WEST. All holsters will be inspected to ensure they are in compliance with our guidelines and safe for use. This includes any holster considered "serpaesque" or having the same type of release that the Serpa holsters have.

LONG RANGE I

2017 CLASS DATES:

OCTOBER 13-15        REGISTRATION EMAIL

Maximum of 12 students.

This course is rooted in the solid fundamentals of marksmanship pertaining to proficient operation of the scoped rifle. Students will learn how to effectively judge and estimate distance, read wind, use of the Mil-Dot reticle, shooting positions and platforms, and how to account for other environmental variables and how those variables are accounted for through manipulation of their optic systems. The shooter will leave the course with the confidence to accurately place their intended shoots on target at various distances.

ABOUT RANDY DeHAY

Red River West’s resident instructor is Randy DeHay. Randy started his 9 year military career with the 82nd Airborne where he served as a Scout sniper in his first deployment to Afghanistan.  Soon after, he joined 7th SFG serving as a SF operator and sniper on ODA 782 completing numerous combat deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan. His military school experience includes: US Army Sniper School, Special Operations Target Interdiction Course, Special Forces Advanced Reconnaissance Target Analysis and Exploitation Techniques, Special Forces Advanced Urban Combat, Special Forces Qualification Course, Airborne, and US Army Ranger School. As a Special Forces Weapons Sgt. (18B), Randy has a broad range of teaching experience in both the military and private sector.  From uneducated illiterate indigenous forces, to special operations personnel, to civilians who are just beginning, and up to elite Police SWAT units.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Focusing on advanced rifle marksmanship and manipulation of a long range weapons system, thus allowing the student to maintain continuity of fire in a frequently changing environment. Students will be exposed to advanced range estimation, allowing them to successfully engage long-range targets utilizing a mil dot type reticle. Alternate firing positions and less than ideal situations will also be stressed, helping the student to accurately engage targets in any scenario. Introduction to spotting will also be covered to provide a greater understanding of wind and exterior ballistics.
